The amazing story of Dutch Passion is not just about a company that sells cannabis seeds. It’s about the adventurous life of the man who started it all, Henk van Dalen. With a background in biology, van Dalen did more than bring the ‘feminized seeds’ technique to the world of cannabis. He’s also famous for his collection of many different kinds of cannabis genetics, which he gathered on his brave travels in the past.

Imagine the 1970s, a time when cannabis was not yet considered illegal in many countries. Van Dalen was a young man then, traveling by hitchhiking from the lively city of Amsterdam to the amazing regions of South East Asia. He went to many places, including Turkey, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, Nepal, Myanmar (once known as Burma), Laos, Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam.

Thailand, in particular, had a special place in his heart. He spent many months there, living with the tribes of Northern Thailand. During that time, he learned and taught about how they used cannabis for rituals and healing. He also shared knowledge about how to grow cannabis for the best results.

Van Dalen collected seeds wherever he could find them and brought them back to The Netherlands. These valuable seeds were kept frozen for preservation, and over time, they became what is now known as the Dutch Passion genetic library.

Fast forward to 2022, Thailand made a big step by legalizing cannabis. To celebrate this event, the team at Dutch Passion looked into their huge genetic library. Their goal was to find real South East Asian strains that could be used to create a new kind of Dutch Passion cannabis.

They found success when they discovered a sealed pack labeled ‘Thai Jungle Sativa 1972’. Of the 33 seeds they tried to grow, only seven turned into healthy plants. One of these plants was selected for further breeding. A bit of Chocolate Thai was added to increase the yield and sweetness, but they tried to keep the original strain as much as possible.

The final result is a beautiful, almost purely sativa blend. It’s a way of honoring the many kinds of cannabis found in South East Asia, especially Thailand. The fact that this Thai variety can now return to Thailand, where cannabis is legal, is a dream come true for van Dalen. He could only have dreamed of this when he first collected these seeds more than 50 years ago. The circle is now complete, and this amazing story of cannabis, adventure, and change has come full circle.
